FLAT ROCK BROOK NATURE CENTER - PHASE 1

Location: Englewood, New Jersey
Client: Flat Rock Brook Nature Association

The Jones Road Streamside Restoration Project at the Flat Rock Brook Nature Preserve offers the public a unique experience of nature in the midst of a densely developed urban area with hiking and nature trails among streams, wetlands, ponds, and meadows. The nature center offers various educational programs for the public.

MKW worked closely with members of the Flat Rock Brook Nature Association (FRBNA) to develop a master plan and Phase 1 construction that integrates their program needs with nature. Phase 1 of the project provides ADA access to this section of the preserve with stabilized pathways, educational signage, ramps, and a pedestrian bridge that leads to a new nature themed playground and picnic grove. Ample seating was provided to allow for quiet reflection in nature as well as places for caregivers to keep an eye on the children in the playground.

The new bridge and ramps were built to meet NJ DEP’s latest flood regulations. The existing bridge, previously damaged by flood waters, was demolished and replaced at an elevation above the anticipated flood elevation. The new bridge is wide enough to allow pedestrians to pause for a look out over the brook and also provides direct access throughout the preserve for FRBNA’s maintenance vehicles. Brook edges near the bridge were stabilized during winter months to avoid impacts to endangered species thought to be in the area.

Phase 2 will feature an outdoor classroom, additional trails, custom welcome signage and an information kiosk.
