PIER 76 - HUDSON RIVER PARK

Location: New York, New York
Client: New York State Parks

Pier 76 is a 5-acre recreational and cultural space on Manhattan’s Hudson River shoreline, achieving the long-awaited inclusion of the former NYC Police Department impound facility into Hudson River Park. MKW collaborated with the project team on an aggressive schedule to develop a flexible design that features moveable precast planters of various sizes filled with native trees, shrubs, and grasses. Their layout recalls the column layout of the former pier shed while enhancing the site’s security by separating vehicular and pedestrian spaces. The plant palette contends with the site’s challenging conditions: urban heat, harsh winters and coastal conditions. Canopy trees provide much needed shade to the site, while shrubs and grasses add a soft contrast to the urban design elements.

The accelerated design and construction timeline and extensive coordination challenges required MKW to take a dynamic and collaborative approach. MKW partnered with engineers, architects, other landscape architects, and stakeholders including New York State Parks and the Hudson River Park Trust to design and construct the new open space in a matter of months. MKW’s flexible approach extended through construction, with the design team working with the contractor to implement material and planting substitutions that respect the design intent while adhering to the project’s aggressive construction schedule.
